talk shows he may be willing to negotiate a little bit on that. let us hear from jeff on the republican line in cape cod. good morning. welcome to the program. caller: i think he is just a shrewd politician. he knows he cannot act to stop the house from passing anything they want right now. a -- so i think he is just taking some wind out of the democrats sale. it would be the senate that would be the issue. but i actually don't think that tax cuts should be extended for really anyone. if the $3.70 trillion deficit projected and only $100 billion would be saved, that is still $3 trillion in debt. i am a middle-class person and i don't mind paying a little bit more for the long-term fiscal irresponsibility. i don't think that the tax cuts should be extended. and i do not think in two or three years they would ever raise taxes to offset the debt for expenses. i would rather see them expire and see what happens. tax cuts are in effect right now. the economy is in the ditch. i don't see that they will create a new job because they are not reading them. host: and you are a republican? caller:

had a busy weekend. thanks for joining us. >> we have to go to headlines right away because if you're following the news over the weekend, you know there's a big storm in bermuda. power out right now across bermuda this morning as hurricane igor pounds this island with heavy rain and high winds. the cat one storm came ashore with furious waves and 75-mile-per-hour winds when it passed about 40 miles to the west. now, it's not expected to hit the united states but could kick up dangerous surf and a little rip current. more than 1,000 people have been evacuated now as dangerous wildfires ripped through the state of utah. at least 300 acres are burning around the town of harriman as firefighters struggled to get it under control, the fire started at a nearby national guard base after an artillery training session. soldiers apparently didn't have the manpower or equipment to quickly put out the flames. iran is now suggesting a prisoner swap with the united states after releasing american hiker sarah shourd, iran wants the u.s. now to free eight iranians expected of smuggling weapons te

million. and the surprising detail, the deficit is down. the treasury department reports the u.s. is on track to record a $1.3 trillion deficit for the first fiscal year of president obama's presidency. 8% lower. that is 8% lower despite the stimulus spending than the 2009 deficit which included the last months of the bush presidency and reflected economic policy signed into law by the end of 2008 by president bush. house republican leader john boehner wants to inkraes that $7deficit by $700 billion bye extending those bush tax cuts on income over a quarter million. but with bob , schieffer, he ev admitted 99% of small businesses will see no benefit from the cut and that 3% of what he calls small businesses make hatch the money. > in a joint committee on taxation which is a nonpartisan body, says that only 3% of the small business people you keep talking aboutll the small business people that are going to get taxed, only 3% would be affected by that, or do you quarrel with that figure? is that a right figure or a wrong figure? >> well, it may be 3% but it's half of small business

to be trying to find the cause for months before it's actually confirmed. but they say that they will let us know as soon as new information comes in on exactly what caused this pipeline explosion. here in san bruno, the investigation continues this morning. thousands of miles of pipeline will have to be inspected by pg&e as this investigation, of course, continues. the ntsb has been collecting evidence from around the blast site, pieces of the pipeline exploded on thursday leaving this crater in the ground in the middle of a neighborhood. the ruptured line was in a high concentration area so it should -- high consequence area, so it should get more stringent inspections. pg&e says the line was slated to be replaced according to documents. now, pieces of it have become evidence instead, including a 28-foot section ripped out of the ground and tossed 100 feet into the air by the blast. it's being shipped to washington, d.c. as part of the investigation. another big part of the investigation, whether or not there was a gas smell reported to pg&e in the days before the explosion. >> we are not

have begun to put the brakes on this recession. the worst may be behind us. >> here is what the website from the white house tauted earlier in the summer. it was recovery summer as it was billed by the white house in campaign across the country as administration kicked off events across the country. here's the economic record which is still quite bleak. 9.6% unemployment. 16 months of straight 9% or higher unemployment. 54,000 jobs lost in august. 14.9 million unemployed. 6.2 million of which are long-term unemployed. and just today in "the new york times" a reminder of the real cost of this. a story that we see as the economy tumbles, numbers of families in shelters rise. you've had a rise in the number of families actually going into homeless shelters. it's a question of the president's rhetoric versus reality. are those things out of sync? >> no, they're not out of sync. obviously in april we were on a slightly greater scheme than we were over the summer because we had a fiscal crisis that took 15% off the stock market and caused businesses to retrench further but reality remains tha
